Young Highland musicians to appear at on BBC National Lottery Awards - posted 02.9.2010 dates: Saturday 4 September 2010
A group of young musicians from the Highlands are set to perform at this year’s National Lottery Awards, being shown on BBC One at 7.40pm on Saturday 4 September. As well as revealing the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects, for the first time the event will also include a special showcase performance from Lottery-funded groups, one of which is Gaelic arts body Fčisean nan Gŕidheal.
Taking part in the showcase are four young fiddle players, two of which (17-year-old Iain Macfarlane from Ullapool and 22-year-old Sarah Barbour from Inverness) are regular Fčis Rois participants, whilst 18-year-old Catriona Murray and 16-year-old Caitlin Sinclair have recently taken part in the Fčis Chataibh Ceilidh Trail across Sutherland. All four have played the fiddle from a young age and benefited from music tuition through Fčisean nan Gŕidheal, the independent umbrella association of the Fčis movement.
‘We’re delighted that these very talented musicians are going to be appearing at this year’s National Lottery Awards representing the Fčis movement on national television,’ says Arthur Cormack, Chief Executive of Fčisean nan Gŕidheal. ‘Over the years, Lottery funding has greatly supported the Fčisean, improving the quality of our work and offering opportunities to young people. The chance to celebrate that is great for these young musicians.' The Awards have seven categories, including ‘Best Arts Project’. Been to the Edinburgh Festival? Don’t throw out your flyers! - posted 20.8.2010
A walk down the Royal Mile during the Edinburgh Festival usually results in a bagful of flyers, most of which end up in the bin or recycling. But Edinburgh Central Library has a much better use for them. Instead of throwing away leaflets you’ve been handed, or programmes for shows you’ve seen, hand them into the Central Library on George IV Bridge, so they can be added to the Edinburgh Room’s fascinating collection of theatre and Festival memorabilia. They’ve been collecting material associated with the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe since 1947, and judging by the amount of printed matter flying around the Capital at the moment, there’s no shortage of new material for their collection . . .
