The Art of Conversation - Membership or Bust? - posted 08.9.2010
Voluntary Arts Scotland presents a one-day event looking at membership in the voluntary cultural sector.
When? - Friday 8 October 2010, 9.30am-4.30pm
Where? - Albany Learning & Conference Centre, 44 Ashley Street, Glasgow G3 6DS
Who should attend? - Umbrella bodies, arts and crafts groups seeking to increase participation in their activities, local authority arts officers and anybody with a vested interest in the voluntary cultural sector.
What's on the agenda? - A stimulating debate about membership. Is it still the most effective way to run an organisation? If so, how could you increase yours? Just as importantly, how can you keep your existing members? Would better marketing and communication help?
We'll also talk about increasing participation in the arts and crafts in general, including a talk on 'Up For Arts', a fantastic programme run by our sister organisations in England and Northern Ireland, which has inspired Voluntary Arts Scotland's Make a Splash! project. We'd like to take it further (e.g. a celebration week across Scotland showcasing the voluntary arts and crafts) - how could you and your group get involved? We'll be discussing all this, and more.
There will also be a smattering of entertainment, a tasty lunch and the chance to do some invaluable networking with like-minded people.
How much will it cost me? - Depending on your circumstances/size of your group the event costs between £15 - £65.
How do I book? - By visiting www.vascotland.org.uk/artofconversation
Please pass this information on to anybody you feel would benefit from attending. We look forward to seeing you there!

Make a Splash! also has a small grants programme (see the Funding section), so you can apply for between £250 - £2,000 to take a risk and try something new.
We're travelling across Scotland with these events, to make sure everybody has a chance to get involved, and our next ports of call are Cornerstone House, Cumbernauld on Friday 17th September and The Teacher Building in Glasgow on Wednesday 22nd September.

Football Clubs looking for arts and crafts input on match days - posted 03.9.2010
A number of football clubs in the Scottish Premier League are looking to improve their match day activities to include entertainment beyond just what happens on the pitch. They are particularly targeting families and children this season, and as part of this they are looking for community groups to get in touch if they feel they could offer their services.
Whilst this would be on a volunteer basis, it would give any interested parties valuable experience and exposure. Clubs are particularly interested in groups involved in art and design, music and dance, but would be open to speaking to any interested group to discuss how they might get involved in the club’s match day activities. Please contact your nearest club or clubs to register your interest. There is no set deadline as clubs will be looking for volunteers throughout the season, so even if you are unable to get involved now, please keep these details in mind for later. Pay it Forward Poetry Competition - posted 03.9.2010 deadline: 1 October 2010
Writer and performer Viv Gee has developed the concept of the Pay if Forward Poetry Competition. ‘Pay it forward’ is a term used to describe the concept of asking that a good turn be repaid by having it done to others instead of returning it to the person who originated the good deed. Keeping in the spirit of paying it forward the poetry competition will contribute all proceeds made from the competition to a local charity.
Each year the competition will have a theme that is open to interpretation. To launch the competition, this year’s theme is Community. Short listed poets will be asked to perform their work at a high profile event, and the winners will be announced in December 2010. First prize is £500.00 plus your poem published in a leading national newspaper such as The Herald, runners up receive £50 plus the chance to perform at the award event.
All proceeds, after costs, will go to a local not for profit group/charity. The beneficiaries will be selected from a different region in Scotland each year and will be informed of the donation at the award event. Poets must be resident in Scotland or have Scottish origins, and each poem must be a maximum of 60 lines. Poems will be judged on interpretation of theme, originality and voice. It costs £5 to enter one poem, £10 for three. For more information on how to enter, go to http://confab.org.uk/html/pif.htm
