Network offers peer support for arts outreach workers - posted 17.7.2010
The Outreach Network has been setup to provide peer support for colleagues working in museums, galleries and arts-based outreach capacities throughout Scotland. The aim of the Network is to share good practice, provide opportunities for networking and to advocate on behalf of its members. The Network has a useful blog which is being used to pass on information about outreach activities in Scotland. It’s also an opportunity for you to contribute directly by uploading details of outreach projects you’re working on or have completed. You can also add comment about other people’s projects. Scots musicians take to the road on musical fundraising trek - posted 17.7.2010
Two Scots musicians are undertaking a 370 mile trek from John O’Groats to Gretna in aid of Capability Scotland. Gillian Maitland and Callum Dewar, both from Forfar, will perform seven world premieres on classical guitar and marimba along the way. The pair, both of whom trained at St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh, will play venues in Wick, Inverness, Perth, Edinburgh and Dumfries to raise awareness of disability issues – in particular young or newly disabled people and those with ‘hidden’ disabilities. Gillian was involved in a car accident in 2007, leaving her with one leg paralysed from the knee down, and was disappointed by the lack of support available. As well as holding concerts and masterclasses, the duo will offer walk-in sessions to members of the public, so people can voice their opinion on making Scotland more disabled-friendly (comments from which will be passed on to the Scottish Government). A CD of the works being premiered will be recorded, and sold in aid of Capability Scotland. For more information about Gillian and Callum’s venture, which begins on 1st August, visit www.callumandgilliansgreatbigwalk.co.uk or www.facebook.com/callumandgilliansgreatbigwalk

National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain – Call for young musicians - posted 17.7.2010
The National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain (NCO), one of the world’s finest children's orchestras, is inviting children aged 7-13 from all over the UK to audition for a place in one of its renowned orchestras in 2011. Joining the NCO is a great opportunity for any aspiring young musician, and instrumentalists who gain a place in one of its 5 age-banded orchestras attend exciting residential courses, with tutors drawn from major national orchestras, specialist music schools and conservatoires.
Grade exams are not a prerequisite at the NCO, as the organisation is more concerned with an individual’s level of musicianship and commitment to playing. Talent is the only criterion for winning a place and full bursaries are available, so no child or parent should be deterred from auditioning due to financial concerns. To audition, young instrumentalists must submit an application form, and the only Scottish audition date is at St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh on 22nd October. For more information visit www.nco.org.uk or tel: 01934 418855.
